Controller/Senior Accountant

Position Summary

The Controller / Senior Accountant is a key member of our Client Advisory Services team, responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of client engagements across multiple industries. This role combines hands-on accounting execution with high-level financial oversight and client advisory work. You will lead month-end close processes, ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, and provide strategic insights that help clients strengthen operations and make informed business decisions.

In addition to delivering technical accounting expertise, the Controller / Senior Accountant serves as a primary client relationship manager—communicating regularly with business owners, CEOs, and internal accounting staff. You will identify opportunities to improve processes, implement best practices, and guide clients through financial challenges and operational changes.

This position also plays a leadership role within the firm, providing review, coaching, and direction to staff accountants and bookkeepers—whether they are part of our internal team or part of the client’s accounting team. The ideal candidate is highly organized, flexible, and able to manage multiple priorities while maintaining high standards of accuracy, professionalism, and client service.

Key Responsibilities

Client Accounting & Controllership

  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for multiple clients across different industries.
  • Oversee and execute full-cycle accounting for assigned clients, including AP, AR, payroll coordination, bank reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze client financial statements (monthly, quarterly, annual).
  • Calculate and file sales tax returns, business license renewals, 1099s, and other required local, state, or federal filings on behalf of clients.
  • Provide clients with financial insights, cash flow management, budgeting support, and variance analysis.

Advisory & Client Relationship Management

  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients, helping them understand financial performance and operational impacts.
  • Recommend and implement accounting process improvements and internal controls.
  • Participate in onboarding new clients, ensuring proper setup of charts of accounts, systems, and workflows.
  • Communicate regularly with clients to address questions, resolve issues, and deliver proactive guidance.

Team Collaboration & Quality Control

  • Review work prepared by staff accountants and bookkeepers—either within the firm or on the client’s internal accounting team—and provide coaching, guidance, and direction.
  • Ensure client deliverables meet firm standards for accuracy, timeliness, and quality.
  • Collaborate with the tax team to provide necessary financial documentation and support.
  • Assist in training staff on accounting best practices, tools, and software.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Utilize and optimize cloud-based accounting tools (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, expense platforms).
  • Evaluate client accounting workflows and implement automations to increase efficiency.
  • Support the firm’s initiatives toward technology-driven, scalable solutions.
